“I have an insatiable sweet-tooth, so this line of work was a no-brainer.
I love bakeries. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to open a little bakeshop in my hometown. My mom baked a lot in our house growing up, and she taught me the basics. As a youngster I would make messy layer cakes and eat the whole thing with several glasses of milk.
In 2003 I started on the path to open my own shop. My finishing skills were still undeveloped, so I moved to New York and got a job as a cake decorator at Baked <www.BakedNYC.com> an up and coming bakery in Brooklyn. They were still relatively new so I got a lot of experience in every facet of the bakery trade. I learned so much working there, it was one of the best times of my life.
I moved back to Virginia to start Bakeshop and change our local sweet scene. I rented a small kitchen space and began baking layer cakes and cupcakes for custom orders. Next I started supplying my favorite coffee spot Murky Coffee with cupcakes and cookies. That got my stuff out to a bigger audience. Requests for cupcakes and layer cakes started to take off, all from word of mouth. Wedding and corporate orders started to flow in and I got rather busy. All the while I was searching for the perfect spot to open my own little bakery. I wanted to be in a nice neighborhood with a good sense of community. It took me several years, but in 2009 I finally found the perfect spot right in Arlington on North Fillmore Street. I’m very happy with the shop and happy to be here.
In my bakery everything is made from scratch and baked in small batches. Each ingredient is specifically chosen by me. I am obsessed with that real homemade taste.
My menu is made up of classic favorites and new creations, things our moms used to make – cupcakes, cakes, cookies, pies, puddings and other sweets. These classic treats represent America’s delicious baking tradition.
Stop by and say whatsup!"
